Application Process
Applications for the 2009 program are made available from the the web site of the Virginia Department of Education. Information from the DOE is authoritative and has the final word should discrepencies arise between information given here and there.
The applications for Humanities and Visual & Performing Arts are extremely time-sensitive. Following the timeline set by your school division or private school and by the Virginia Department of Education (DOE) is required for successfully completing the application.
Students receive their applications from school guidance counselors or administrators responsible for the selection process, or download them from the DOE website. Applications completed on time are forwarded to the school district's or private school region's selection committees, which then ranks the applications and sends the top nominees to the DOE. All students forwarded to the DOE will receieve notification in Mid-April from the DOE regarding their status. All others should be notified by their school. Final selection of accepted and waitlisted students rests in the DOE, not with the local school division, private school, or individual programs.
Students who are home-schooled or are residents of Virginia but attend accredited schools outside of Virginia may also be nominated for Virginia's Governor's School if they meet all eligibility requirements. Such students should contact Dr. Donna Poland at 804-225-2884 for more information.
