Teacher Recognition Day is precisely that — an opportunity for students in the Governor's School to recognize teachers who have had a positive and formative impact upon them. Initiated in 1989 by the Governor's School for Humanities at the University of Richmond, Teacher Recognition Day provides students a chance to say "Thanks" to a teacher, and provides nominated teachers with much-needed encouragement and praise for a job well done. Every student has the opportunity to nominate a teacher from his or her past to be recognized on Teacher Recognition Day. Of the 400 students attending the program, over 75% nominate a teacher. The total number of teachers who attend a portion of the day consistently exceeds 150. The culminating activity is a ceremony in the teachers' honor. During that ceremony, each teacher is presented with a citation noting his or her selection by a Governor's School student. Those unable to attend receive a letter and the citation from the President noting the honor bestowed upon them.
