FAQ by Prospective Students

Thank you for your interest in Governor's School! Our program is a four-week summer program for rising juniors and seniors in high school who are Virginia residents or are eligible to attend school in Virginia. We've constructed a list of questions with answers from our site that should be particularly helpful for you as you explore the program available to you at Governor's School.

 

The applilcation process for the 2009 program will begin in October. Applications are made available from the Virginia Department of Education website as well as from your local high school.

What are the courses like? 

Although the classes offered change every summer, descriptions from previous summers will give you an idea of the types of courses we offer. Descriptions for the upcoming summer are usually posted in late April. More...

What is life like on campus? 

Many aspects of residential life at the Governor's School are covered in the Student Handbook, including guidelines and expectations we have for student behavior while on the program. Because the program has moved from its previous location, the 2009 Student Handbook is undergoing a more serious revision than in most years and will not be available until Spring. Who are the faculty and staff? 

Faculty, resident advisors, and support staff hail from the entire country. The work at high schools, colleges, and as professional artists. They all live on campus for the duration of the program. More...

How will I spend my time?  

Scheduling changes frequently occur, but this schedule provides a basic idea of the daily schedule. Evening activities occure most nights and include acitivities such as student variety shows, local performing groups, and speakers. Where can I view pictures of the program and facilities? 

Currently, you may view pictures from last summer's program to get an idea of what you might be doing during your month with us. However, these pictures were taken at the University of Richmond. While the activities may be similar, the backdrop will be different. More...

How do I apply? 

The application process is run by the Virginia Department of Education. A student must be nominated by their school division or private school in order to be considered for the program. Any student may download an application and submit it to their school for consideration. More...
